Know My Culture: Japan

Fargo Public Library

In collaboration with the Japan Outreach Initiative, North Dakota Asian-American Arts and Cultural Initiative (NDAAACI) presents Know My Culture: Japan on Saturday, June 22, at 2 p.m. at the downtown Main Library. This immersive cultural presentation is for all ages, and includes a tea ceremony demonstration and traditional clothes (yukata and kimono) demonstration while children will have the opportunity to try Japanese games and toys.

North Dakota Asian-American Arts and Cultural Initiative (NDAAACI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2022. The organization creates programs designed to promote
cultural exchange and foster civic engagement.

Happy Birthday, Harry Potter!

Become a citizen scientist at a Bioblitz! What is a Bioblitz? It’s a fun, intensive, short search and information gathering session, looking for biodiversity in a specific location. Children, teens and adults are invited to attend and help in the search at Oak Grove Park on Saturday, June 22 from 9-11 a.m. Different species of birds, plants, insects, mammals and more will be documented on smart phones and digital cameras using the Seek (kid-safe) and iNaturalist (ages 13 and older) app. If you have a smart phone, install the Seek or iNaturalist app to record and share your findings. Photo observations are instantly uploaded into the global data base and used by real conservationists and researchers. Paper forms will also be available for keeping track. We’ll be joined by graduate students/researchers from NDSU's School of Natural Resource Sciences, staff from the City of Fargo Forestry Dept., United Prairie, and NDSU's Plant Sciences, and other experts on the creatures and plants found in our area. Together, let’s discover the natural world in our own backyard! (Children ages 10 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.)

Bird Identification for Kids

Fargo Public Library

Chickadees and Sparrows can look a lot alike. How do you tell them apart? What is the difference between a Crow and Raven? Find out the answers to these questions and learn the basics of bird identification at this special birding program for kids. Presenter Grant Mehring will introduce the birds we might find in our neighborhoods and help us learn how to think about identifying a bird that we are seeing. Join us for this fun and interactive program that should leave you a better bird identifier! This event is for all ages, but geared towards kids 7 - 12 years old.

Grant Mehring is a self-taught birder with plenty of lessons from experienced area birders. He has guided area bird walks, taught birding classes for the Fargo Park District, served on the board of Audubon Dakota (now Great Plains), and gets his friends and family more interested in birds all the time.

Let's Get Buggy!

Something bugging you? Summertime means that the bugs are out! But how well do you know the creepy crawlers that share our world? Bethany Robertson, Research Specialist in Insect Ecology at NDSU's School of Natural Resource Sciences, will show us some cool insects (both live and from NDSU's collection). She'll explain their main characteristics and tell us about all the neat stuff they can do! She'll also share safe ways we can catch and look at insects, and how to help them out at home and in our yards. A fun insect-related activity will follow. Kids of all ages are welcome, but this event is geared toward those going into grades 1 - 6.

The World of Fungi: They Are Everywhere!

What are fungi? What do they look like? Why are they important? Kids of all ages are invited to learn the answers to these questions and more when Berlin Nelson Jr., retired professor emeritus from NDSU, where he taught and conducted research on the biology of fungi for 41 years in the Dept. of Plant Pathology, joins us at the Main Library. He will also show various types of fungi that you might find while on an adventure exploring nature! No pre-registration is required.

Growing Together, a local community garden group, and the Library are partnering to plant, maintain, and harvest the Library Learning Garden plots located by the Dr. James Carlson Library. Here's how it works: Drop off new or gently used craft supplies you no longer use at any Fargo Public Library branch starting Monday, April 8. The swap will be open to everyone on Saturday, April 20 at 12 pm, but those who donate items in advance will receive an early entry ticket for 10 am! Any supplies that are leftover after the swap will be donated. Recognizing Reptiles: The Not-So-Creepy Crawlers!

National Reptile Awareness Day occurs each year in October as a way to promote education, conservation, and appreciation for reptiles. In honor of these cold-blooded creatures, we're celebrating with a visit from some live reptiles! Kids of all ages are invited to investigate the really-not-so-creepy crawlers with members of the NDSU Herpetology Club, who will be on hand to show off some of their scaly sidekicks. Rivers as the Thread: Considerations from "Hudson Bay Bound"

The Library, in partnership with the Skate City, will provide free admission and skate rental for children and teens (16 and younger) on Monday, June 5th from 10 – 2pm.* Kids will be encouraged to boogie down and participate in skating activities. "The Night Watchman" Book Discussion

Dr. James Postema, Concordia College English professor, will lead a discussion of the The Night Watchman. Dr. Postema specializes in teaching Native American Literature. He will lead a discussion of the real-life contexts surrounding this semi-fictional work.

The Muskrat and the Long Knives: Understanding 1940s–1960s U.S.-Indigenous Relations as Portrayed in Louise Erdrich's "The Night Watchman"

A presentation by Dr. Erik Gooding, anthropology professor at MSUM, will describe and put into context the U.S.-Indigenous relations during the period of termination from the 1940s to the 1960s. Special attention will focus on the U.S.-Ojibwe situation as presented in Louise Erdrich's novel The Night Watchman.

This event will be held in the City Commission Chambers at Fargo's City Hall and streamed live on the library's Facebook page.

This event is part of the 2022 One Book, One Community reading project.

The Traveling Lantern Theatre Company returns in person to the Fargo Public Library stage courtesy of the Friends of the Library. This summer's performance is Camp Ocean. Mr. Sharky, your snaggle-toothed camp counselor, has planned a fish-fact-filled voyage to the bottom of the sea. Learn the ropes: how to puff like a puffer fish, flop like a flounder, and fence with a swordfish. You'll search for buried treasure and dive into the mysteries of the ocean. Introducing Jo Jo Makoons with Author Dawn Quigley

Children’s book author Dawn Quigley will read from and discuss her book, Jo Jo Makoons: The Used-to-be Best Friend, the first volume of a chapter book series. A citizen herself of the Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwe in North Dakota, Dawn will discuss her childhood experiences growing up and not seeing books that represented her Native community. Author Dawn Quigley: Native Representation in Children’s Literature

Dawn Quigley, Ph.D. and citizen of the Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwe, ND, is an assistant professor of Education at St. Catherine University. She has written a number of children’s books, such as the coming-of-age young adult novel, Apple in the Middle (NDSU Press), the chapter book series Jo Jo Makoons: The Used to Be Best Friend (book 1), and Native American Heroes (Scholastic Books). Quigley will discuss her books, writing, and her work to amplify Native voices in literature and education. This event is free and open to the public.

Summer Reading Challenge Kickoff at the Red River Zoo

This summer we are wild about animals! Kick off the Fargo Public Library’s Summer Reading Challenge by visiting some amazing animal friends at the Red River Zoo as part of our kickoff event.
• The Fargo Public Library, in partnership with the Red River Zoo, will provide free admission for kids ages 0-14* to the zoo on Monday, June 7, 2021, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• This event is open to children of all ages.
• Kids will be encouraged to explore the zoo with a scavenger hunt activity and craft.
• There will also be amazing animal storytimes, and while you’re enjoying the zoo don’t forget to register for the Summer Reading Challenge to get started reading.

Kindergarten Success Storytime Series: Write All About It!

Get your child ready for Kindergarten by exploring literacy and STEAM topics through music, stories, songs, and play. Library staff will share tips you can use to instill a love of reading in your child. These events are for young children ages 3 to 5. Activities will follow each storytime and all children will receive a FREE book!

These are parent/child storytimes geared for your child’s success; therefore, we ask one adult per child to keep the learning to the maximum. No pre-registration is required to attend and all materials will be provided.

Preschool Storytime: International Week of the Deaf: American Sign Language Storytime (Fall 2019)

Spend quality time sharing stories, learning school-readiness skills, and preparing your child for a lifetime of reading at storytime! Through the use of age-appropriate stories, songs, and fingerplays in a group setting, staff help you learn how to foster early literacy skills that prepare your children to learn to read. Preschool Storytimes are for children age 3 or older. Children turning 3 during the current session may also register. Pre-registration is required. Register online or call Children's Services at 701.241.1495.
Friends from the North Dakota School for the Deaf will be our guests at one of our regularly scheduled Fall storytimes. We’ll learn what it's like to use American Sign Language to communicate and share stories using signs. This event is open to all children whether you are registered for Fall Storytime or not.

Registration for the Fall 2019 Storytime session (Sept. 9 - Dec. 11) begins Aug. 1, 2019.

During the preschool storytime sessions, parents/guardians are required to remain in the library building. Jazz Into Fall concert

The Fargo Public Library will again be hosting a series of free concerts as the annual Jazz Into Fall* series begins again on Sunday, October 1. This year’s concert line-up features some of our community’s favorites as well as featuring some of the next generation of great local musicians. Come to the Main Library’s Community room at 2 p.m. on Sundays in October to hear both familiar standards and new compositions. All concerts are approximately one hour long, and are free and open to the public.

Presentation: Youth in Revolt – Alexander Hamilton and Coming of Age in the American Revolution

Join us as Donald Johnson, Assistant Professor of Early American History at NDSU uses the career of Alexander Hamilton and others, to explore how the American Revolution affected the lives of those who came of age during the political crisis that preceded it, the War that it led to, and the chaotic period that ensued.

At the dawn of the Revolution more than 1/3 of Americans were under the age of 24, and while older Revolutionaries like George Washington and Benjamin Franklin may have pioneered the ideology of rebellion, it fell to younger founders like Alexander Hamilton and James Madison to do much of the fighting and governing in the post-Revolutionary landscape. This presentation explores both how these peoples’ lives were shaped by the Revolution and how those young people shaped the course of Revolutionary events.
